Spent Fuel Storage

After having been removed from the reactor, a spent fuel assembly will still emit both radiation and heat as its unstable nuclear fission products continue to transform into other nuclides. Spent assemblies are therefore stored under water in a dedicated storage pool at the nuclear power station for cooling and radiation shielding. They are typically held in this way for several years to allow the radiation and heat to decrease before they can be conveniently removed from the power station.

Depending on national requirements, the spent fuel assembly will either be reprocessed, or be prepared for permanent disposal.
