Nuclear Basics
To understand the basics of nuclear energy is to be able to understand how we extract energy from atoms of certain suitable materials. An atom is so small. that there are far more atoms on the head of a needle than there are people on earth. Indeed the amount of energy we can obtain from a single atom is very small. But because even a small lump of material contains literally billions upon billions of atoms, we can get a lot of nuclear energy even from a small piece of suitable material such uranium. A small pellet of commercial grade uranium that weighs just over 7 grams yields about the same energy as burning half a tonne of coal or 1.5 barrels of oil.
