There is a need to monitor the environment around the Guangdong Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station (GNPS) because:

the nuclear power station will release a small quantity of radioactive substances into the environment in gaseous and liquid forms. Even though the quantity and its environmental effect is small, it still needs to be monitored.
The monitoring activities will assist emergency planning in the unlikely event of a nuclear accident affecting the surrounding areas beyond the site of the nuclear power station.
